Oakwood’s Maker Station Where Our Students “Dream It, Believe It, Achieve it!”Oakwood Elementary’s Media Center is more than just a library. It the goal of the school to make the media center the hub and the heart of the school. Students come as classes once a week for media center instruction and book check-out, but there’s SOmuch more going on in the “library.” Mrs. Kaylor, our media coordinator, offers additional programs for the patrons of Oakwood. Each grade level, on rotating schedules, has the opportunity to come to the library on Thursday and Friday mornings for workshops and relaxation. The workshops are held before school from 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. The workshop time is flexible enough so that bus riders and students who eat breakfast in the mornings still have the opportunity to come on down to the library when they arrive to school. Each week, the 5th Grade Library Assistants facilitate mini workshops that address motor skills, reading, and reading comprehension. These opportunities are great times for Library Assistants to develop mentoring and leadership skills. They research basic activities that can be accomplished in the library. They show initiative in planning activities and have a keen interest in working with different grade level students. Some of the activities undertaken include origami, designing bookmarks, and digital book talks.
